Will PyGaze/PyTribe work with Eye Tribe Tracker Pro

Hi all,

Does anyone know if the Eye Tribe Tracker Pro will have the same API as the original Eye Tribe, and hence will be compatible with PyGaze/PyTribe? I haven't been able to get a reply from the Eye Tribe people, so I thought I'd check to see if anyone in this community had information or insights.

  • Hi Tom,

It's best to ask the EyeTribe people to confirm this, but my guess is that: yes, the API is the same for the EyeTribe Pro as for the original EyeTribe, and therefore the EyeTribe Pro should work with OpenSesame. I think this because they describe only a single API on their website, and they also have only a single SDK download. So it seems like only the hardware has changed, but the software has stayed the same.

@Edwin, do you agree? Have you tried, or heard of people trying?

There's much bigger issues in the world, I know. But I first have to take care of the world I know.

  • Hi guys,

My guess is as good as yours... I would be very surprised if the API were to be subject to dramatic changes, seeing how well constructed it is. That'd mean PyGaze should work just fine.

As far as I'm aware, the Pro isn't available yet, so I don't know of anyone actually trying.

  • Thanks for your thoughts, Edwin and Sebastiaan! I'll let you know what the Eye Tribe folks say when I hear back from them.

  • As you both suspected, the Eye Tribe Pro will continue to work with PyGaze/PyTribe, according to their customer service manager. While I have you both in one thread, let me thank you for your work on OpenSesame and PyGaze! OpenSesame has many subtle yet brilliant improvements on the comparable proprietary software, and PyGaze has radically democratized eye tracking. I couldn't believe how easy it was to program an experiment in OpenSesame and record eye movements with the Eye Tribe via PyGaze. These tools are a huge contribution to psychology and to individual researchers like myself :)

  • Thank you! We're happy to hear that.
