JATOS - local installation fails

Hello,

I tried to run a local JATOS installation on my 64-bit MS Windows as it is described on jatos.org. I have a Java Runtime Environment already in place and I checked my Java version with java -version:

java version "1.8.0_251"

Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.8.0_251-b08)

Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 25.251-b08, mixed mode)

I unzipped the jatos.zip folder into the ordinary program folder on my local disc. When I doubleclick load.bat or execute it with admin rights, the command window opens for a split of a second and then shuts down immediately. On a second try, I was quick enough to click on the command window and here is what is written there:

"No entities available

Starting JATOS ... please wait

Access denied

The system cannot find the stated file" (Translation from German)


Needless to say, I cannot connect to http://localhost:9000/jatos/login

Could it be a problem with my firewall or something similar to it?

    Could you please try to install JATOS bundled with Java already (https://github.com/JATOS/JATOS/releases/download/v3.5.2/jatos_win_java.zip). With this we can rule out if there are any problems with your Java. Btw. the bundled Java will be local and does not interfere with your OS' Java (except of course for JATOS) - so it is safe.

    I have exactly the same problem although I downloaded tha jatos_win_java.zip file. I tried on several computers and it still doesn't work :(

    We need more details to troubleshoot your problem (because we just tried JATOS v.3.5.3 on a Windows 10 pro and it worked): which JATOS and OS version are you using?

  • Just a quick thought, for both @maj_zmaj and @christinaverena : are you sure that you first unzipped the entire JATOS folder? If I remember correctly, windows lets you look into and open files from a zipped directory without really unzipping it first.

    I am using Windows 10 and JATOS v3.5.3. Yes, I fully unzipped it in the Program files folder in C:\.

    I unzipped the entire folder.

    My OS is Windows 10 Home Version 1909. I checked the version of the jatos package WITHOUT java - it's 3.5.2.

    Then I tried the bundled version that includes java (version 3.5.3). Same problem here.

    I helped myself in the meantime by installing Ubuntu on my pc. I had some issues installing OSWeb and other extensions but I managed that by using pip3 commands. Jatos works just fine on my Ubuntu system!

    I see in the screenshot from @maj_zmaj a line that does not belong there: "Access is denied." But now my knowledge of Windows gets blurry (I work with Ubuntu or MacOS) and added to the non-meaningful error message, I can only take some guesses: 1) Maybe you need administrator rights to run Java? 2) Maybe the folder under which you installed JATOS is restricted and you can access it from there? You can try and put JATOS in a different folder and check the folder permissions.

    It works for me now!! I scanned the folder with windows defender.

    Right click on the jatos_win_java folder -> Scan with Windows Defender. Now when I click on the loader the cmd window stays and the http://localhost:9000/jatos/login works.

    I tried to turn off windows defender for the folder before and it didn't work.

  • Hi, I noticed this discussion. I got the same problem in which I click "loader" and the cmd window stays for a split second and disappears. I tried scanning the folder and still have the same problem. Has anyone found another solution for this?

  • Same issue here, with both version 3.5.4. and 3.5.5, both with java. If I run it without admin rights, it just shows me the error message:

    No entities available

    Starting JATOS ... please wait

    JATOS uses local JRE

    To use JATOS type 127.0.0.1:9000 in your browser's address bar


    If I do, the browser tells me that the website is not accessible. If I leave the console open and open a second window by double-clicking the loader again, it tells me JATOS is already running, so something must be working.

    Interestingly, my computer is also set up in German, could there be a compatibility problem?


    If I run the file with admin rights, the console pops up for a split second and disappears again.


    Windows defender is managed by Kaspersky in my case but no amount of folder scanning and declaring it safe as changed anything.

    Just a hint for the next time: It's better to open a new thread - old threads get easily overlooked and you can always link to the old thread.

    That you got this message, 'To use JATOS type 127.0.0.1:9000 in your browser's address bar' is already a good sign. Although usually JATOS is up an running within seconds, on some computers it can take a couple minutes (< 4 min).

    If this does not help please post your loader.log and application.log here. Both are in your JATOS folder in /conf.

    And I can't imagine that setting up your computer in German would interfere with JATOS.
