  Hi Sandra,

  Good to hear that you've decided to try OpenSesame! I understand that you want to insert a piece of text into the question, based on a previous answer of the participant, right? Yes, that is certainly possible, and not even terribly difficult.

  If you want I can give you some pointers right away. But, if you're really new, perhaps it would be a good idea to start first with the tutorial, and perhaps watch some of the videos. This shouldn't take too long. And then, when you have a basic understanding of the program, start on your own experiment.

  Actually, I already did the tutorial during this morning, I did it easily. The tutorial is very clear and helpful.

  Actually, about my question, I do not want to insert a piece of text in the question. What I want is to insert text before and after the likert scale, for example:

  completely true (likert scale) completely false

  is it possible? If yes, how?

  Hi Sandra,

  Ah I see, you want a Likert scale embedded in the question. No, unfortunately that's not supported out of the box. It would be possible to implement it using inline script, but not entirely trivial, because you would have to take into account the geometry of the text when drawing the scale and interpreting mouse clicks.

  There are a couple of options that I can think of:

  • Just use the Likert scale with the sentence presented above the scale (obvious option)
  • Use a multiple_choice item that describes each option with text ('should', 'should not', etc.)
  • Use a text_display item (duration 0) that displays sentences like My friends think that I should {1 2 3 4 5} I should not eat fruits and/or vegetables as snacks, between main meals and afterwards capture a 1-5 response with a keyboard_response item.

  One of the above is probably easiest. Another approach would require a bit of inline code, but not as much as the mouse-driven embedded Likert scale.

  • Present sentences like My friends think that I should {-X---} I should not eat fruits and/or vegetables as snacks, between main meals and have participants use the left/right keys to adjust the position of the X and press 'return' or 'space' to accept.

  What do you think would be most appropriate in you situation?

  Hi Sebastiaan,

  Speaking of multiple_choice items, how do you get the logger to collect the response for each multiple choice item? The logger only seems to have a count and a time option in the variables. When I try to create a response variable for my multiple_choice item, while running the experiment it comes with an error message letting me know that the variable has not been set.

  I went through the questionnaire example found in the plugins folder, and it seems to have a custom source item and a response has been collected, but I was not able to find a script to make up such a custom source item.

  I am pretty inept at this sort of a script, and my experiment has turned out pretty good apart from this small glitch, thanks to OpenSesame. But, I am a little lost on this.

  Ah, ok. Glad you fixed this!

  Just so other people can know the answer as well: The questionnaire items don't expose their variables properly, so the variable inspector doesn't list them. But the questionnaire items simply set the 'response' variable. If you log the 'response' variable you should be fine.
