Recording Responses

It still needs a bit of working on but I have set my 2 tasks up, however when I click 'run' to test whether it works, it runs through the trials but when I look at the excel document it provides afterwards I'm not sure it's providing me with the right information. The responses required are '1' for old image and '2' for new image. I have set this up under 'correct_response' in my block loop table, and in the excel document it has a column 'correct response' with either 1 or 2 listed, but doesn't seem to be recording the actual responses.

I've followed all the steps on the step by step guide for creating a response so I can't work out why my responses aren't recording. Originally under 'response' it just said N/A, it now says 0 so i'm not sure whether this just means it's incorrect or whether it's supposed to list either 1 or 2 depending on which answer was provided.

  • Hi,

the variable response contains the key that was pressed. So, in your case "0" doesn't seem to make a lot of sense, it should really be 1 or 2. Could you upload your experiment?

  • Hi Eduard,

My trials are now working (am in the process of editing my pictures which I haven't changed on here yet) and things need tidying up. I've ran through some trials, but it doesn't seem to be recording any responses. There is a 'correct response' column where it says either 1 or 2 depending on whether the object is old or new but no responses are recording.

I've attached my experiment, so if you have any idea of why this isn't working that would be great.

  • Attached is a copy of the excel document it provides when i run a few of my trials, as this might make it clearer what I mean. As you can see there is a 'correct response' column which provides the correct numbers (either 1 or 2) but doesn't seem to be collecting any actual responses.

  • Not sure what the problem is, your experiment works. In your log file there is a column called response, which will carry the information which key was pressed. In the log file you attached, the variable response suggests that no keys were pressed. Did you do that?

I just run the experiment and it works just fine.

  • Yes my experiment seems to work, but when I was running through some trials I pressed either 1 or 2 to test it, but on the excel document under 'response' they're all just listed as 0?

  • Sorry, but I can't say anything else. Your experiment works. If I press, 1s and 2s they appear in the logfile right where they should and where I told you.

  • Are you meaning they're appearing in the excel document when you test it? As when I test it I can't find anywhere that the responses are logged, its only giving me 'correct responses' but not the actual response

  • Yes, that is what I mean.

  • Would it be possible for you to attach the document you get when you test my experiment please? So I can compare it with what I'm getting?

  • There you go.

  • Thank you! I can straight away see that our 'correct response' columns are the same but under 'correct keyboard' which I'm assuming is the answers the participants give, some of your rows say 1 whereas all of mine say 0 even though i have been pressing either 1 or 2 for each trial?

I know my experiment is working but I don't understand why this correct keyboard response column is giving me 0's instead of the actual responses?

  • No, the answers participants give are stored under response.

Oh okay thank you! I've just tested it again and under 'response_image- it lists either 1 or 2 depending on which one I chose for each trial, so these are the correct numbers, but under 'response' which you've said is where the answers are stored it says 'None' for all the trials?

So is it okay to look at 'response_image' as these answers seem to be what I picked, or is this something different?

Attached is the document it gives me

  • It this fits what you pressed, then you're fine.

  • I think it does, but I'll test it again. i just don't understand why my 'response' column says none for every trial whereas yours actually says 1 or 2?
