Getting onto a Jatos server

Hello,

I looked through the documentation and was able to install a local Jatos, but because of it's IP of 0.0.0.0000, I could not distribute links to participants. However, I am struggling to figure out how to install an actual Jatos server on my laptop, or have access to one in some form. My university does not have a server they can provide access to. I have been looking through the forums and reading the documentation, but the installation process is still unclear to me. I followed the steps from this website: http://www.jatos.org/JATOS-on-a-server.html but the .zip file I downloaded (jatos_mac_java.zip) only allowed me to use the local Jatos.

I may be missing a step, or perhaps there is something I do not understand. Can somebody please explain how to get onto an official Jatos server, so that I will be able to export my experiments onto it and distribute public links? I appreciate it so much!

Best,

Nikita

  • Hello Nikita!

Creating a jatos server on a computer is a tricky thing. I can tell you what I did. I bought a cloud computing on DigitalOcean as it offered a very cheap alternative. However, you will need a credit card but it does have paypal option. It took not more than an hour to setup the server and start distributing the link.

In order to use DigitalOcean click on the link below

    Hope it helps

    Hi Nikita,

    You have three options:

    1. As Vatsal said, you could install JATOS on your own Digital Ocean account
    2. You could expose your local installation to the www. We explain how to do that in our docs. This option works, but is not the most stable or robust and you should consider whether it's appropriate given how much traffic (participants, data size) you expect
    3. For a few months, we are offering a free Digital Ocean server. Details here. If you decide to use this server, please check with us re traffic and server load, and consider buying us a coffee to help cover the server costs.

Please keep in mind that only with option 2 you actually have full control over your data. Be careful with your ethics, and if you plan to follow options 1 or 3, make sure that you have approval to store data on the cloud.

    Hope this helps

  • Hello,

Thank you both for the responses! My professor and I were able to get the Jatos server on a cloud so the problem is solved. Again, thank you for the reply!

    Best,

    Nikita
