Getting installed JASP to run

I have installed both 64-bit and 32-big -- as well as copying over the pre-installled 64-bit JASP -- and after NONE of these uninstall/installs can I get the program to actually run. I double-click on JASP.exe (including as administrator), and literally nothing visible happens.

I am using Windows 10 Home edition (version 1909), on a 2017 Dell Inspiron laptop, with an Intel CORE i7-7500 quad processor.

What am I missing, please? Thank you!

  • Strange. I asked the team about this (maybe it was you, on the mail) and they were unsure what happened. I'll forward this post to them (GitHub is easiest for trouble-shooting, but let's see -- the team will need some more information for sure)

    Cheers,

    E.J.

  • No, EJ, this is the first time I have communicated about this issue. But I did go back and look at other posts, and I saw where another Dell user was having similar (but not the same) problems. Thanks for your help!!

  • Could it possibly be similar to this problem: https://github.com/jasp-stats/jasp-issues/issues/681

I've been trying to get more info on this problem but the original poster of the issue went missing in action and then the second follow up came from another user with the same isse. Who did manage to give me some output from the dependency walker (described in the issue). Which was helpful, but only in eliminating certain problems as possibilities.

If you would like to help it would be great if you could help me there, by posting

    (a) the output of dependency walker as described at: https://github.com/jasp-stats/jasp-issues/issues/681#issuecomment-614853800

    (b) Trying to start JASP with logging as described at https://github.com/jasp-stats/jasp-issues/issues/681#issuecomment-633020698

If you feel it is too much work to register a user account at github you could also post the results here but in that case it will probably be a bit longer before I get back to you. But regardless where you post this information, it would be of great assistance!

  • JGoosen: I ran the dependency walker, and saved the log file. Unfortunately, this Forum will not let me attach the .dwi file, as it is not an allowed extension. Alternatives??

    Thanks! -- Grover

  • Hi Grover,

Can you attach a zip file and upload that? If not, you could email Joris (a list of email addresses is at https://jasp-stats.org/team/)

    E.J.

  • Here is the JASP.dwi file. Thanks for your help!!

  • Aah yeah, I see what is going wrong.

You seem to have the following folder on your computer: "c:\program files\adoptopenjdk\jre-11.0.7.10-hotspot\bin\" that leads JASP astray. Quite possibly other programs as well by the way.

You can solve the problem by removing that folder from your PATH. Or to make it easier and you do not need that folder, just remove it from your computer (or rename it). After that JASP will probably start.

  • Well, thanks for the suggestion -- but that did not solve the problem.

I deleted the folder you identified, then downloaded and installed the new version of JASP. Once again, like every other time, the installation went rapidly, completely, and successfully.

    But JASP will NOT run.

I double click on JASP.exe, the animated little blue circle whirls around for about 2 or 3 seconds, then goes away. Nothing runs.

I am still eager to try to make this work, if you have any other suggestions. Thanks again.

  • To JGoosen: Have you found any other things I can try to make JASP run on my Windows 10? Thanks!

  • I'm still trying to get JASP to run, but I haven't heard back from my last 2 or 3 messages asking for further help. Can someone step in and troubleshoot this? Many thanks!

    Hello drgroverbproctor!

Sorry for not getting back to you before, but I honestly never use this forum unless my attention is pointed here by someone. In this case I had expected to get mail notifications for your responses...

I'll see what is up with that.

It is quite possible that a similar problem is still plaguing you, so I hope you are not fed up with us yet, but perhaps you could run the dependency walker again and attach it?

Because the folder you already removed was definitely a problem, but I can't guess what else might be. In the meantime I will try and make sure to turn on mail notifications

  • So those mail notifications are on, but I cannot find any of your messages.

Not to push you off or anything, I want to help you out, but it would really be helpful if you instead asked this question through our github page for issues at: https://github.com/jasp-stats/jasp-issues/issues

Anything there is sure to be seen by me or a colleague, I will check this post out again later. But this is bound to slip between the cracks again... Unless the mail-notifications actually start popping up in my inbox of course.
