Is it possible to use audio files as stimulus and collect the reaction time with a button box?
in OpenSesame
Hello,
I want to run an experiment using audio files and am interested in the reaction times. Is it possible to use OpenSesame for that?
Also, does it make sense to use a button box or are keyboard responses equally accurate.
THANK you for your help!
Kind regards.

HI Iliano,
I suppose that you want to present a visual stimulus first. In addition, you can give an auditive stimulus (directly afterwards will be felt like simultaneous).
If you ask for a response (keyboard/mouse) the program will probably wait until the auditive stimulus is finished. Hence, it depends on how long your stimulus is (you may cut it properly).
You may also consider whether you want participants to respond already during auditory stimulus presentation or not. (You can flush the responses)
Hope this helps
Stephan
To add on this, it depends on the precision you need. Both keyboard responses as well as button boxes are reasonably accurate, but button boxes are generally better. If you don't run experiments in which every ms counts, a keyboard will probably do, but of course to be sure, button boxes make more sense.

Yes, absolutely. It is quite standard actually. The procedure that Stephan suggests is generally accurate. There is only one thing that I would like to correct/elaborate on:
If you ask for a response (keyboard/mouse) the program will probably wait until the auditive stimulus is finished.
In the sampler item, you can specify the duration of the item independently of the duration of the sound playback. That means, you can immediately proceed with the next item in the sequence (normally response collection), without having to stop the sound.
Hope this helps,
Eduard
Thanks a lot!!! That was helpful indeed!
