Simultaneous input of a sound and a visual stimulus

Hello to all!

I am designing an experiment based on stroof effect though I am going to create a cross-modal effect meaning that one group of participants will see the visual stimulus and at the same time they will hear a sound. More specifically, I will ask the participants to try to read the correct colour in incogruent stimuli (e.g. the word "red" will be written in a different color) while at the same time they will hear a beep sound every time the stimulus changes (i.e. in every appeared word).

However, I am realy stuck on how to do this. Can you help me?

Thanks in advance!

  • Hi @Kassiopi ,

Thanks for your interest in OpenSesame and welcome to the forum! :)

I think you could use something like the following structure. Note that OpenSesame is now waiting for a keypress after every word, so you'll have to change that to fit your protocol.

There are plugins for sound recording, but they are quite old and not stable.

An alternative would be to collect keypresses for different colors, or to make the experimenter make a keypress depending on whether the participant's vocal response was correct or not.

    Hope this helps!

    Cheers,

  • Thank very much Lotje!

I will try this and I'll be back to let you know if it worked! One more question: my research has 2 conditions (one with the beep voice and one without). How can I design these two conditions in the Open Sesame (I know that the loop has to do something with this but I am very confused as to how).

Thank you again for your help!

  • Hi @Kassiopi ,

You can create a new column in the block_loop that indicates whether the sound should be played or not. In the screenshot below, I created the variable "play_beep", which can have the value "yes" or "no".

Next, you can use a Run-if statement in the trial_sequence item to determine whether or not to execute the sampler item (which is playing the beep).

I uploaded the modified example script.

    Hope this makes sense!

    Good luck!
