Mousetrap: idle time

In my mousetracking data, there are extremely long idle times (e.g., 4752ms, z_idle_time = 6.3), which can be problematic. Nevertheless, I haven't come across any guidelines regarding how to deal with long idle times or how to analyze idle time. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

  • Hi there,

That's a good question - I am also not aware of specific guidelines for analyzing idle times. However, before analyzing idle times I would address the question whether long idle times are actually mostly caused by long initiation times (i.e., when you subtract initiation time from idle time on a trial level, it would be interesting to see if the residual idle time is rather small)? If so, analyzing intitiation time might make more sense and this variable has been used in many mouse-tracking experiments.

  • Hi Pascal,

That sounds like a great plan for dealing with idle times. Many thanks!
