JASP 16.1

Hi,

I am a big, big fan of JASP. Today, I downloaded the new version 16.1 and took her for a spin. I started with some descriptive statistics but I got rather bit disappointed. All the plots were now placed under each other and one have to scroll a lot. It also was rather cluttered with a lot of additional options. I utterly hope that JASP will not lose its slender, fresh and user friendly outline which in my mind have been its signum and something me and my peers and students love. It is easy to loose this streamline when one want to have everything in the software. However, then it just becomes another statistical program. I have more hopes for version 0.17.

  • We'll take a close look. Do you have any suggestions on how to structure the options so that it doesn't feel cluttered? I do believe that plotting is an essential tool. Is it only the plots that feel cluttered?

  • We obviously don't want to become Just Another Statistical Program ;-)

  • OK, I took a closer look and I agree the current setup is getting needlessly convoluted. What I proposed to the team is the following:

    1. Underneath the variable box, have the "transpose descriptives table" (but not frequency tables and stem and leave tables; these are rarely used and now take up prime real estate)

    2. The first tab underneath should be "Statistics" (I always explain first how a table can be customized by selecting different options here; it is a key section and now appears at the end)

    3. The second tab should be "Basic Plots"

    4. The third tab should be "Customizable Plots"

    5. The fourth tab should be "Tables" -- here we just have two options, side-by-side: frequency tables and stem and leaf tables

    6. The fifth tab should be "Tile Heatmaps for Selected Variables"

We'll debate this over the next few days. Any feedback or concrete alternatives are welcome. (Note: the tile plots are actually pretty cool once you know how they work)

  • Thank you EJ for your swift reply.

Your suggestions seems great😜. Maybe possible to populate the right side more (see screen shot).

Is it possible to locate the tile plots as a sub-drop down menu? I am not familiar with tile plots. I am sure it it is cool and maybe somebody will produce a video showing the functions in the future.

  • EJ!

BY the way, I saw one thing about your first suggestion. !The frequency table is vital and a must for categorical data. However, I concur about the stem and leaf table.

  • The team has already done the reorganization, and this takes care of the empty space as well. I am sure this is up for continual adjustment. The changes will be included in the next release.
