problems with links for participants: they do not work

Hi everyone!

I have installed Jatos (Windows) to send a study that I programmed in Opensesame to some paticipants.

I have some questions, firs one: do participants need to have java or jatos installed on their laptop? Do the versions in this case need to match with mine? Because without java/jatos the link I send to them seems not to work at all (the page can't be loaded).

Second, the participnts who have jatos installed received the message "a problem occurred: a study with ID (num) doesn't exist" both with Personal Multiple Worker and General Multiple Worker links. Why is that?

Thank you in advance for your help, very much appreciated!

  • Hi Iris,

JATOS is meant to be a server that people access through the Internet. You are running JATOS locally, on your computer. Unless you make that accessible through the WWW, other participants won't be able to run your study and send you the result data. See our documentation about how to bring a JATOS instance online: http://www.jatos.org/Bring-your-JATOS-online.html.

So to answer your question, participants don't need to have JATOS installed, but you need to install it on a server and not just on your computer.

If you don't want to do that, and are ok with people running the study on their own computers and (e.g) send you the data via email, then yes, each participant needs their own local JATOS. But then you won't be able to send them a link, they will have to run it from their own JATOS installation (click on the Run button of the study)

    Hope this helps clarify things

  • Thank you very much!

Do you know also if I should generate each time the Jatos link I send to my participants since the ngrok sub domain changes each time I connect myself to the port?

    Thank you in advace :)

Hi, I haven’t used ngrok myself so I’m not sure but it sounds like you’re connecting and disconnecting? If you want to expose your local jatos, you’ll have to leave your computer on and port connected all the time. otherwise yes, your domain and IP address will change. For a more stable solution, you’ll need a „proper“ server.

  • Hi!

I have installed local JATOS. But the link does not seem like a real one (see below) and it does not work. What should I do to fix that?

  • Hi Esra,

Please open a new thread for a new question. Otherwise this forum is getting confusing for everyone. Thanks!
