randomization pictures
Hi,
I am a new OpenSesame user. I have a question about randomization. I create an experiment. In experiment I have pictures. I want to the pictures to presented to the participants in a random order. And I want to save the order in which the pictures are presented. Can you help me how to do it?

Hi @psychlg,
Welcome to the forum!
Based on you description, you simply want to present a series of trials in random order. This jjust requires that you set the order property of the loop to "random".
The order of the trials will be saved in the data output (for this, you need to use the logger).
If you're new to Open Sesame, I really recommend you take the time to go through the tutorial and read the documentation to familiarize with OS's basic features
There are also many examples and entries in the forum regarding different levels of randomization complexity.
Hope this helps.
Fabrice.
Hi again,
Thanks for your answer. I solved this problem.
In my experiment, after some pictures were presented, recognition task will begin. Also at this stage the pictures will come randomly. Where should I put "logger"?
Should I put it at the end of the encoding task or at the end of the recognition task
OR should I put it at the end of the both of them?
Hi @psychlg,
Basically, you should include the logger at end of any sequence in which information is presented or collected that you want to see in the data output. So, if you want to keep a record of the order in which the pictures are presented, and then of what is presented and what participants respond in the recognition phase, yo should include the logger in two places. Best is to use the same logger throughout (using a linked copy, not a new distinct logger every time; as the latter can create problems).
There may be more subtle things to do, depending on the specifics of your design and what you plan to analyze afterwards.
Hope this helps.
Fabrice.

Hi @psychlg,
Nice that Fab could help your problems. Let us know whether it solved your problems.
That aside, it seems you have not spend a lot of time familiarizing yourself with Opensesame. Perhaps I am wrong, but both questions that you asked are explained in the beginner's tutorial. Generally, I cannot stress enough how useful it is to take some effort in the beginning of getting used to Opensesame and work through some tutorials, even if it seems a detour from designing your experiment. Nevertheless, the time you invest there to understand the components of an experiment and the general logic of how to structure it, will make it easier for you in the future to design all your experiments. And of course, if you still don't understand something after reading the documentation, you can still ask here for help.
Thanks,
Eudard
