OpenSesame freezes between practice and test loops

edited February 2023 in OpenSesame

Hi, I have an experiment that gets stuck between the practice and test phases. This happens on several different (Windows) computers and updating OpenSesame to the latest version didn't help, so I think there's something clunky in my experiment, but I can't see what!

Here's the experiment tree, it gets stuck after sending "trigger_pracend":

According to the printout in the console, nothing is happening (i.e. "trigger_fixation" in "experimental_loop" isn't sent). Sometimes it freezes completely, sometimes it might come unstuck after a minute or two, and sometimes it works fine. This might be related to which experimental list is used?? I have a conditional to pick which .csv stimuli file to open, but that seems weird so I'm not sure:

Any suggestions? I've attached the experiment in case it helps.

Many thanks,

Kate

Also, after it crashes, closing and re-opening OpenSesame seems to prevent any delay in moving to the experiment_loop, so maybe it has something to do with caching? (even though it freezes the first time I run the experiment after opening OpenSesame, so any cache should be clear).

  • Hi @stoney ,

I took me a while to figure this one out, but the problem comes from the constraint that you are putting in your loop item that is called "experimental loop":

    constrain item_type maxrep=2

Apparently, it is (nearly) impossible to meet this constraint, which is why OpenSesame is freezing (i.e. reshuffling infinitely, or at least very oftenly).

If you remove this constraint the error goes away.

    Hope this helps a bit!

    Cheers,

    Lotje
