collect data

Hi!

after I use a form multiple choice - how can I collect the data? I assume it is with the mouse_response function and the logger, but I'm not sure where exactly to put them. (I have 5 sequences, and each one has about 7-8 multiple choices)

  • Hi,

If you have a form, you don't need an additional mouse response. To log all responses you would either need to make sure that the response variable of each form is unique and put a single logger at the end of each sequence, alternatively, you can put a logger after each form, that will also work.

  • Thank you! And just to make clear - it is the same linked copy of the logger, or a new one each time?

  • Hi @asifzach,

A logger saves all variables (unless you set it otherwise) in the state they are in at that time. If you're presenting a multiple choice item in every trial, include the logger at the end of your sequene trial.

If you have several distinc multiple choice items within the same sequence, you can add the logger after the last of these. If you do so, as @eduard, pointed out, make sure that the response variable is different for each of your forms.

If you must use several copies of the logger across the task, use linked copies.

    Best,

    Fabrice.

  • Im afraid something doesn't work for me:

This is my experiment. I start with an IAT test (not shown in the picture) which works perfectly, and then I have 4 sequences (in the picture), and in each multiple choice I have options like totally disagree, slightly disgree, neutral, slightly agree and so on (it's an explicit test).

In that case, where should I put the logger?

Until now, wherever I tried to put it (the logger), when I ran the experiment it kept going back to the instructions (of the last form before the logger)

Thank you Fabrice and Eduard for your help, and I hope my question was clear!

  • Hi Asif,

As I said, if each of your forms has a unique response variable name (that you can specify in the field on top of the form, see response_variable in the screenshot

then one logger in the end of each sequence is enough.

If you have not changed the variable, you need to add a logger after each form (and yes, linked copy makes sense)

I start with an IAT test (not shown in the picture) which works perfectly,

Personally, I wouldn't combine two experiments in one, as the logfiles can become a bit messy like that. If you don't care about it, you can still do it of course (but make sure that you check your logfiles after, to see whether you can extract the data you need from them)

Until now, wherever I tried to put it (the logger), when I ran the experiment it kept going back to the instructions (of the last form before the logger)

I don't get this. The logger does nothing that you can see live in the experiment. The changes will affect the logfile though. And if you say "going back" you probably mean that the next iteration of the loop starts and you're back at the top, right?

  • about the last question you asked - if I put a logger at the end of sequence 1 for example, it goes back to new_2_sketchpad (the instructions) and does not go on after that (stuck on the instructions)

about the 2 experiments combined - is there a different way I can make sure the same participant does an IAT test (experiment 1) and an explicit test (experiment 2) if they are not in the same file?

    Thank you again!

  • Hi @asifzach,

I cannot really identify where the issues are just based on your instructions without seeing the task. Any chance you can upload it here (or a stripped down version of it)?

Regarding the forms, as Eduard mentioned, you need to make sure that each has a unique response variable name. the logger can then be located after all the forms and you'll find on the same row the responses to all of the forms in columns corresponding to the varaible names.

Regarding the task going back to the instructions, this is not related to the logger. the problem must come from elsewhere but I can't tellñ you where without seeing the task.

Regarding the IAT part, you'd want to have the logger at the end of the squence correponding to a trial (so that each trial is registered).

Regarding the combining of two tasks... One method is to program two dostinct tasks and run each participants through both (making sure that you give that participant the same participant number in each of the two tasks so that you can later on cross the data from the two individual data outputs). the other method is what you are doing: including two tasks in on program. This can be done but just keep in mind that your output will contain the variable of both tasks, hence the output can be a little overwhelming unless you restrict which varoables are saved (be careful with this to make sure not to excude varaibles you actually need for your analysis). If you go down that road, my recomeendation would be to create a variable coding for the task or phase of the experiment and to make sure it featrues in the output. With that information, you can then later one use features in Excel to filter or sort that variable to separate easily what data lines are from what task.

    Hope this helps,

    Fabrice.
