Stimulus File Size

Dear all,

I am preparing to launch a study, programmed in jsPsych 6.1, on JATOS and MindProbe. The .jzip file exported from my local JATOS server is approximately 124.78 MB. Each stimulus image can be as large as 673 KB (though they will be resized in the script), with up to eight images appearing simultaneously on the screen. The script includes a preloading function.

The study can run well on the local server. However, when the study is deployed using the internet server, sometimes the experiment becomes stuck at the image preloading screen and thus fails to load, and at other times, the experiment runs well at the beginning and then the images start to slowly pop up or appear one after another.

I suspect that the size of the images or an unstable internet connection might be contributing to these problems. Any advice or solutions you can offer would be greatly appreciated!

  • Hi,

Yes, this is what I guess is happening here. If something works well locally on your laptop with a reliable and extremely fast network connection, it doesn't mean that it works smoothly in the Internet with a possibly slow or interrupted network.

There is probably room for improvements but it's very difficult to give any advice from far away since I do not know your experiment or jsPsych or the plugins you are using there.

  • Thank you! It is a bit strange that it doesn't work that well in the internet even though the same network has been used for both local and internet testing.

It is great to hear that there might be room for improvement. I’d be happy to send over the JavaScript code if you think that would help :)

  • Hello! I could also share the study with you if it is easier to access everything? Thank you!

  • I'm sorry, my schedule right now is overwhelmingly full with duties and I just can't offer this type of extensive service for free.
