Verbal response recordings on OpenSesame?

Hello OpenSesame Community,

I would like to inquire on how to implement sound recordings in an experimental setup. It may be relevant to know that I am new to the program and working with it for the first time.

Specifically, I would like to know whether a verbal response can be recorded (per trial) following a visual stimuli. Normally the experiment would have had a keyboard (manual) response but because we aim to eliminate movement all together during the experimental sessions we would like to replace it with a verbal response approach. If a verbal response recording following each trial is possible, can reaction time still be accurately recorded?

Would the "Audio Low Latency plugins" be appropriate for this specific set up?

Any guidance regarding this inquiry would be appreciated.

Many thanks,

YL

  • Hi @Yassi_Lange

Yes, the Audio Low Latency plug-in is the best option. You can find more details on how to use it here and here for example.

In the context of audio recording, if you don't need the response time information while the experiment is running per se (i.e. if you only need it later for analysis), the easiest approach would be to use some external software (or designated toolkits/custom functions in Python) to process the recorded audio files after the experiment and identify the onset of speech from the audio signal directly.

    Hope this helps,

    Claire
