[solved] Can't play sounds (Windows 8) from sampler but synth tool works.

edited May 2014 in OpenSesame

First time working with OpenSesame in order to run an auditory perception study exploring the motion cues in sound. I have managed to organise an experiment that seems to make sense but unfortunately despite my best efforts I can't seem to get my .wav files to play. I am running the most recent version of Opensesame on a Windows 8 ASUS laptop (Intel i5) laptop. I can't quite figure out why the files are not being played. I thought it might be because of the way I had created the sequence loop so I added a "practice" sequence with just one .wav file to play but this also doesn't seem to work. The wav files play fine outside of the package and a sound generated by the synth tool also seems to work. Any ideas as to what I might be doing wrong?

    Hi!

Could you perhaps email me one of the sound files in question, so I can check it's specifics? (codec and such)

    Thanks!

Thanks for the files! And thanks for the clear description of the problem, by the way!

All right, the problem is that the files (uncompressed 32-bit IEEE float audio) were not supported by PyGame (the package that is used by OpenSesame to play sounds). This is a bit confusing, as they are .wav files, which in most cases are supported. To be honest, I'm not exactly sure why PyGame does not support your files.

That doesn't mean that there's no solution, though! The files can be converted to a supported file type, e.g. using the VLC media player. To do so, download VLC (free and open-source software, created by volunteers), and follow the following instructions:

    1) Go to Media -> Convert / Save...

    2) Select the file you want to convert, and press the Convert / Save button.

    3) Select the correct output type, by setting the Profile to "Audio - Vorbis (OGG)"

I've did this for the two files you sent me, and have emailed them back to you.

    Good luck!
