[open] OS 2.8.1 gets blocked with a loop of 120 videos (VLC) and inline with microphone RT

Dear colleagues, I made an experiment (legacy back-end, with others it does not work, or gets blocked rapidly), it's a loop (120 cycles) containing a fixation, a VLC video (a 1 MB clip), a capture of microphone for reaction time (it's a inline which I found here), a multiple choice form. It gets blocked after 5-40 cycles (it does not respond, I open the task maganer in Windows 8). Then I made 6 loops with 20 cycles in each, and now it gets blocked after 5-100 cycles. With six block sequences in a loop it is the same. Can it be a problem of operative memory (120 clips = 120 MB or many microphone recording)? Or should I restructure the experiment another way (e.g., 12 loops with 10 cycles or a sequence with 120 items)? It works perfectly when I assign only 20 cycles for the whole experiment (one loop). It cannot be a problem of a clip because I use the sequential order of presentation, and it gets blocked in different clips. I put "no double buffering", but it does not help.

    Hi Svetlognev,

    What do you mean with blocked? Does it freeze up on a specific frame, or do you see a blank black screen and the experiment simply does not continue upon a keypress?

    These kinds of random freeze-ups are always really difficult to address. It could be due to a problem of the media_player_vlc plugin or the sound_recorder one, a problem in the way you implemented your scripts, a problem with the underlying libraries on which OpenSesame depends, or the hardware you are running your experiment on. Considering the last option, have you tried running the experiment on a different machine to see if the problem still persists?

    The structure of your experiment should not really matter in this issue I reckon. There is no intrinsically different way in which OpenSesame loads modules depending on its iteration structures, and sound recordings are saved directly to a file and thus take up no memory. So it is weird your freeze-ups occur at different moments depending on the way you implement the loops and cycles.

    So it is hard to give you any advice of where to look. You could try and see if the media_player_gst video player does not lock up for you? It is a whole reimplementation of this plugins and uses different libraries for playback and rendering.

    It freezes up on a random video clip and does not respond, but it is supposed to go to the fixation when I say something to microphone. (I open the Windows task manager to quit the experiment, but not OpenSesame). Yes, it may be a problem of VLC plugin or sound detector.
    Thank you, I will try everything that you propose, and if it does not help, I will just make 6 experiments with 1 loop, 20 cycles in each.
