[solved] My sketchpad doesn't have the 'image tool'
I would like to use an image and then register where my participant clicks on the screen. This protocol is used in the online tutorial 'cat faces'. However, when I go to sketchpad I don't have the icon 'image tool' and I can't import images (I have attached a screenshot). I downloaded the recommended version of Open Sesame for my Machine, which was the 'Windows XP/Vista/ 7 installer' version.
Any help would be very much appreciated!
Thanks a lot,
Jayne

Hi Jayne,
I can't see the screenshot. Are you sure you attached it? Would you mind posting it again? A link to it, would also be fine.
Thanks,
Eduard
Sorry about that. The screenshot is here:
Thanks for your help!
Hi,
See my attachment.
This is what you need, right?

Hello Eduard,
Thanks for your suggestion - but unfortunately that's not what I need. That icon is to draw an image and I want to import an image (a photograph). On the tutorial he selects 'image tool' and then goes to the file pool to find his image. I can find the image I need using the file pool, but I have no way of telling Open Sesame that I want to import it into sketchpad!
Oh sorry. But then, which tutorial (and which step) do you mean then? Cats, dogs, and capybaras?
The need to import and image new to me. Usually, you just have to make sure they're in the
filepooland you should be good to go.Eduard
It is the video tutorial 'cat faces': http://osdoc.cogsci.nl/tutorials/video-tutorials/ it is at 29.15. The demonstrator obviously has a mac and the layout etc. is different to what I see.
Jayne
Ah, now I see. The video tutorial is using another OpenSesame version than you downloaded. More precisely, it is an outdated version. However, the functionality of drawing images in a
sketchpaddidn't change much. So the button, I marked in my previous post, should be able to do the exact same thing as the video describes it, the only difference its the icon and its label.fyi, the step of putting the images into the
filepool, before choosing one of them to be shown in thesketchpad, is actually not related to thesketchpadand its image tool. In the beginning of creating your experiment, you could put all your images into thefilepool, without including a singlesketchpad. Later, when you're adding images to thesketchpad, they should appear right away in the list.Does this make sense?
Eduard
Thanks for that, it's good to know that I'm not using an outdated version. But I don't want to draw an item, I want to import a picture, so the 'draw image element' is of no use to me. I can see my pictures in the filepool manager however my only options are to rename the file or to open it, but when I open it - it just opens in Microsoft Office on my computer. What I need to do is open a picture in the sketchpad of open sesame.
Thanks for your help,
Jayne
Hi Jayne,
Maybe it's me, but these two statements are somewhat contradictory.
If you wanna import an image without showing it ever, you don't need the
sketchpad, then you can use theexp.get_file(filename)command from within aninline_script. If you want to open an image in asketchpad, there is no need to import your images, you just have to follow the instructions of the video tutorial (keeping in mind to use different icons). In fact, under the hood, thesketchpadis retrieving the files from the filepool if you click on thedraw_imageicon and select an image.Just to be clear, the
sketchpadis no replacement for an image viewer or processer. It's only purpose is to facilitate drawning any kind of stimuli during an experiment.Do I still misunderstand your problem?
Eduard
Ahhhhh, I see. I need to click the 'draw image element' icon to open my picture. Okay, I have now got this to work. Thank-you so much for all of your help.
