Response interval -- clarification

edited February 2017 in OpenSesame

Hi all,

I have a question about what the response time variable is actually measuring. The definition for response time given in the manual is "Contains the interval in milliseconds between the start of the response interval and the last response." It's clear to me what the last response is, but what is considered the start of the response interval?

In the experiment I am currently building, we are presenting an auditory stimulus while the participant sees a blank screen with a fixation point. Afterwards they are presented with a question about the sentence (text_display screen, duration = 0), and their response is recorded via keyboard_response. We are interested in the response time to answer that question. However, it's unclear to me when the response interval begins -- does it begin when the text_display screen is presented, or at some point earlier or later?

Thank you so much!

Stephanie

  • Hi Stephanie,

If you are talking about the reponse_time variable of your keyboard_reponse item (which appears in your log file as response_time_keyboard_response by default), then that number indicates the onset of the response item until the moment a response has been given.

However, since your text_display is set to duration = 0 the response item starts simultaneously with the text display. Assuming there is no other item inbetween, that is. Therefore, the interval might also indicate the onset of your text display until an answer has been provided.

    Does that clear it up?
