How Do You Balance Technical Setup With the Actual Research Question?

When working with experiments and research software, I sometimes find that the technical side can become almost as important as the research question itself. Things like configuring software, checking compatibility, managing data, and making sure an experiment runs consistently can take a surprising amount of time.

I also enjoy exploring technical setup and troubleshooting in other areas, including emulation and gaming. I keep some practical technical guides at https://ps2bios.com.br/, which has given me a lot of experience with configuration and compatibility issues.

I'm curious how other people here approach this balance. Do you prefer to keep your experimental setup as simple as possible, or do you spend more time customizing the technical side to create the workflow you want?
