accuracy of reaction time

hello, i have made and executed a visual search task experiment; i am interested in the accuracy and reaction times. the reaction time in the csv file is coming in 3digit number i.e. 155, 231, etc. please help me i cannot understand why most of the reaction times are coming in 3 digit (and some in 4 digit which do seem legit) because if it is in miliseconds then there is something wrong with my system or is it a bug??

  • Hi,

If participants respond slower than 1 second, than the response time will have 4 digits. If they are quicker there will only be 3 digits. What exactly is the problem with that? To me it sounds very logical.

  • hey,
the issue is that- task was complex enough that a reaction time in 3 digit was unexpected not possible in reality.

  • In reality, participants respond sometimes without having the correct response. So, I wouldn't yet assume, response collection doesn't work properly. But you can run some tests yourself, e.g. respond 10 times very quickly, 10 times very slowly, etc. And see whether they recorded response times match.

  • ok thank you but i have already worked with thirty participants and i am not getting a consistent pattern in the response time

  • What do you mean consistent pattern? There is always variability, and depending on the task, there can be even a lot of variability (particularly with very difficult tasks).

Well, in general you should test your script before recording a full sample.

  • ya i did test on few subjects before running it on whole sample, but at that time i did not face the issues anyways m thankful for ur guidance. i will take care about things in future

  • Did you figure it out the problem?

    I'm having the same problem.

  • Hi,

What problem are you referring to? It still isn't clear to me what the original problem was supposed to be. Can you maybe share some log files that illustrate the problems?
