[solved] image as a variable

edited March 2013 in OpenSesame

Just learning; great tool!

I would like to display target and distractor images at various locations, and I was wondering if an image file could be a variable. Then I could locate a variable on a scratchpad, give the variable values file names, and watch the stimuli populate with targets and distractors at various locations, generated randomly. To give an example, imagine a visual search task with a target image on the left, and a set of four items arranged in a diamond on the right. One of the images on the right is the target and the other three are distractors. Can I have OpenSesame pull the target image and distractors from a set, randomly? It sounds like the way variables get used in the Gaze Cueing demo for targets (F and H), but they're images rather than letters.

    Hi,

    Welcome to the forum!

Yes, using a variable containing file names as values in order to determine which image(s) to show is certainly possible.

The step-by-step tutorial gives an example of how to achieve this, on page 10 in the section 'Draw the target'. In this example, it depends on the value ('left' or 'right') of the variable 'gaze_cue' which image is shown in a sketchpad item.

I think this part of the tutorial contains most of the information you need. If you have any further questions, don't hesitate to ask them!

    Best,

    Lotje
