Randomization of trials

Hello,

I just started open sesame yesterday and i have some troubles to find a way to randomize the trials of my experiment (also so sorry for my broken english) . I read previous discussions but i don't think i have enough knowledge of open sesame to understand if it could be applied to my experiment.

So my experiment is a decision making task composed of 70 trials.

Each trial is composed of 2 sketchpads, one keyboard response and a logger.

I think i know how to create the 70 trials, but i don't how to randomize the order of the presentation of the 70 trials from one participant to another.

Here is a pic of the three first trials :

Thank you for any advice you could give me.

  • Hi Ed,

Welcome to Opensesame! I have good and bad news. The good is that randomization in a scenario that you describe is no problem whatsoever. The bad is that your approach doesn't really work.

I would recommend to start with doing the beginner's tutorial to get a better idea of how to structure trials and blocks in Opensesame. It will be a great investment and doesn't take a lot of time. Here is the link:

To comment on your attempt, you don't need to create a separate loop for every trial that you have. The regular approach is to have a single loop for a specific block type, and code trial types or other variables that are manipulated within a block, for example, in the loop table. This is also where you specify whether you would wish to randomize the order of trials in your block.

I hope this makes sense. Let me know if anything is unclear.
