[solved] keyboard_response item blocking the task

Hi all,

I have designed a task that should run on the web, on JATOS. I have tested the task both in an external browser and on JATOS and when it reaches the part where there is a keyboard response, the task is just blocked.

I have tried deleting this item and just placing a logger directly under the sketcpad of interest. When I run the task in my OS the keyboard responses are logged, but I guess because I am logging all variables. When I finished the task on OSweb and inspected the elements the response there resulted as None. I think this means that without the keyboard response item. OSweb will not be able to log the response, which is the whole point of my task.

Is this normal? because the OSweb window says there is no incompatibility (I deleted all the forms and stuff). How can a keyboard response, which is a key element for experiments be blocking the experiment?

Any advice is welcome.

Hi @m.vel ,

A first thing that comes to mind is that you set the duration of your sketchpad to "keypress". If you place a keyboard_response item right afterwards, OpenSesame actually waits for two keypresses; one from the sketchpad and one from the keyboard_response. To solve this, you can simply change the duration of your sketchpad to 0.

Does this solve your problem? If not, could you upload your experiment here?

Thank you for your suggestion.

The duration of the sketchpad is keypress, but the timeout for the keyboard_response is 0, so that works fine. The experiment is working fine on my local open sesame, but then does not work on the web version, it seems to really freeze when it reaches the response part. And there I tried pressing a lot of keys, clicking, and it does not progress.

Any other suggestions?

Hi @m.vel ,

I'm not sure whether it is related to the issue that you are experiencing, but the sketchpad-keyboard relation should really be the other way around:

• Set the duration of your sketchpad to 0
• And have it followed by a keyboard_response item (with a timeout that is set to 'infinite', or to a reasonable timeout like 2000 ms)

If this does not solve your problem when running the script in a browser, could you please upload it here so that we can have a closer look?

This fixed it! Thank you so much for that suggestion.

But, could you please tell me why the settings that I had made the experiment be blocked in the browser? Because the task worked locally, and the results were properly logged. So what happened during the export that it no longer worked online?

Hi Lotje,

Since you helped me with my last issue I have a question. U have another task on Open sesame, it is much simpler: a proficiency task. There are no declared incompatibilities when I check it for OSweb.

However, it will not load past the instructions sketchpad. This is just a sketchpad with some text with the duration set to keypress. No logger or response item is after that. I also tried setting it for a specific duration and it does not go to the next screen on OSweb. Do you have any insight on why this could be?

It sounds like the issue comes from somewhere in the logic of your experiment after your `sketchpad` item with the instructions. Is it possible to upload the experiment here, or provide us with more details about the items following the instruction `sketchpad`?

Sure,

I am uploading the experiment. But I don't think that it is the logic of the experiment as it proceeds fine with the other images. The images and audios are matched in the loop table. also, i have the same version for Norwegian, same setup and it works just fine.

Anyway, the task is attached, and thanks a lot for taking a look at it.

Hi @m.vel,

Thanks for uploading the experiment. I noticed that the spelling of the .ogg files and the values that you typed in the loop item do not always correspond exactly. For example, 'italiano_35.ogg' should be renamed to 'Italiano_25.ogg' (with a capital) in order to match the corresponding file. If you change the values in the loop items accordingly, do you still encounter the above-described issue?

Hi Lotje,

yes, that was the problem. I am usually quite through with naming my files, but this must have slipped because the task worked on my local OS. There must be a difference in case sensitivity for the local and the web version. I appreciate so much you taking a look at this, as you can see a pair of fresh eyes really helped.
