Presenting two different stimuli at the same time

Hello everyone,

I'm new here and would really appreciate any help I could get.

Could anyone explain is it possible to present different stimuli at the same time?

I am building a self paced reading experiment and would need to match every word in a sentence with a different imported sound.

I'm completely new to OpenSesame, and this would really help me a lot!

Thank you in advance

  • Hi @newbie05 ,

If you're new to Open Sesame, make sure to check out the great tutorial the developers published on the website (section: Tutorials), as well as video tutorials like this one.

Regarding your query, the trick to simultaneous presentations of stimuli is to set the duration of the relevant objects to 0ms and then insert a keyboard object (or some other response object) to take the response. This may sound counterintuitive but setting the duration of, say, a sampler or sketchpad to 0 does not mean that it lasts 0 ms but rather that the task presents these objects and wait 0 ms to move on to the next instructions.

Here's a basic example, where I present a fixation cross for 500ms, then a sound (notice the duration:0), and then a sketchpad where a visual word is presented and which as a duration set to 0 as well.

You can download this basic example here:

That's just the basics but hopefully it should help you get on. Make sure to check the great resources available online and to search the forum if you're facing more challenges.

    Good luck!

    Fabrice.
