Numerical Fields Not Recognized as Numerical

I have 4 "value" or numerical columns as the last 4 columns of my data set. The last two are recognized as numeric and can be put into various fields as "Variables". However the other two when i select them the arrow grays out and one can not drag them over. I looked at the raw data table in JASP and the raw CSV file but nothing jumped out at me as messed up. Any thoughts on what the issue could be or how best to find it?

thanks

  • Hi Alan,

You can start the detective work by considering the icon on top of the column -- what measurement level does it indicate? Also you can run Descriptives on the columns of interest -- do they show standard deviations? Do they indicate particular number of missing variables? If you could share one of those columns that would be a great help.

  • It looks like I can convert, but why it is not interpreting the simple CSV file wrong? It was a more complex CSV file, but started cutting out stuff to test the issue. This 2 screen shots should show what you were asking. Column "Curr. amount" should be treated as numbers but not seen that way. In review the columns look "clean".

  • Ooops it seemed to imply I could change the column type, but did not seem to work

  • Sorry about the hardy reply, I was on vacation. It seems to me the offending column includes comma's, and this tricks JASP into believing these are text entries. Note that the comma's will be problematic for other programs such as R as well.

    Cheers,

    E.J.
