Blocking a keyboard-response - Question

Hello!

I am working on a simple reaction time experiment. The participants are supposed to press the Space bar in the interval of one second as accurately as possible. After the practice trial, i build in a scetchpad for 5 seconds which should be a signal for the participants to stop pressing the Space bar. After that another sketchpad follows, which contains the instructions for the following experimental trial. This one should be ended via a keyboard reponse (Space). I noticed that the second sketchpad is skipped when I press the Space bar during the time in which the first sketchpad (the one which is shown for 5 seconds) is shown. This should not be the case. Can anyone tell me whether it is possible to block the keyboard response for the first sketchpad so that the second sketchboard is not skipped when someone (accidently) presses Space?

  • Hi @SQuestion,

Not entirely sure I understand your description and how you implemented the task (whether you're using keyboard_response objects, for example). A little difficult to answer without more information or seeing the task. Do you present sketchpad for a duration of 0ms and then collect a response using a keyboard_response object? Are you using an advanced_delay object to create the 5 sec interval? Do your keyboard_response objects have the "flush pending key events" enabled? Do you specify allowable responses? Are you running the task in a OS window or in a browser?

Without knowing more about the implementation of your task, my advice would be to make sure to use keybpard_response objects where you specify the allowable response, make sure to enable the "flush pending key events", and make sure to use an allowable response that excludes the space bar after the sketchpad you do not want to go away if the participant presses the space bar.

    Hope this helps.

    Best,

    Fabrice.

  • To second Fabrice's remark, it would be easier to help you if we had more information about the implementation. Could you maybe share your experiment or make a few screenshots? The way I understand your description is that you have 2 sketchpads back to back, one with duration set to 5000, the other to keyboard ? If so, that something is weird, because that should work (and does work when I try it).

Once you provide more info I'm sure we can figure this out.
