Recording vocal response times - again

Hi all,

I know that this is a problem faced multiple times, but since OpenSesame is orphaned the voicerecord plug in, recording vocal answers is painful.

In a speeded detection task, ehat I like to do is to record a wave file, where I artificially put a "spike" at the beginning of each trial, and then record the vocal answer. After the experiment, with an external script, I compute the difference between the ariticial spike and the vocal answer, obtaining in this way the reaction time.

I developed a simple script (that needs pyaudio and portaudio) that allows for stimuli visualisation, sound recording and mouse answer recording (used by the experimenter to pass to the next trial).

This script works in an amazing way on my PC. However, in some cases, when I put the script on other windows-based PCs the script does not work, recording wave files of only 1 ms.

Do you have any suggestions?

In attachment the experiment. CREATE_OUTFILE is at the beginning of the experiment, while audioname shows the stimuli and records the sound.

Thank you very much for any feedback,

Michele

  • Hi Michele,

That sounds like an annoying problem. That it runs on your system is a good indicator for you not doing anything wrong. So, my guess is that it must be to do with some system difference between your pc and the one where it does not work.

I have no solution to your specific problem. Maybe you can try to find out whether the same version of pyaudio and portaudio are installed (and generally packages Opensesame uses). You can also try different (sound) backends. Finally, it might also help to try to copy the exact Opensesame environment (via a conda install).

Perhaps someone with more experience on Windows can chip in here, but other than those suggestions, I can't really help, unfortunately.

    Good luck,

    Eduard
