Default image size

Hello everyone,

I am currently working on a picture selection task where participants hear a sentence while two images are displayed and they hace to select which one corresponds better with what they just heard. I already have the images for the experiment, but I have to scale them so that both of them fit.

In this regard, I would like to ask whether there is a default image size in Opensesame so that I can modify the files of the pictures and upload them with that specific size. This way, I would not have to scale them and therefore, they will not lose image quality.

    As far as I'm aware, no, there is no default image size. When you insert an image from the pool onto a sketchpad, by default it will appear with its actual size (scale=1), and you'd have to use the scale parameter to alter its size. Whether the image appears too small or too large by default also relate to the resolution you set for your experiment. For example, by default Open Sesame experiment are set to a resolution of 1024 x 768. Hence if you're using 1920x1080 images and want them to occupy the whole screen, you can either set the experiment's resolution to 1920x1080, or change the scale parameter of the image object to a value that would fit, or modify your pictures to save them with a specific resolution.

    the latter can be a better option than scaling down because it means that your image files will occupy less disk space, and so the experiment may run faster. Open Sesame can read jpeg and png images. I'd recommend the first because jpeg compresses information more than png, and so it helps reduce file size. When saving your jpegs, some editor can give you the option of setting the quality (e.g. Photoshop allows you to save it with a quality between 1 and 12, 1 losing more information, 12 losing less). That setting can help reduce the file size too, which can help keeping the experiment fast in terms of temporal resolution.
