Mouse-tracking indices
Hi @Pascal ,
I hope you are well.
I was wondering if you could recommend any articles/text that will help me understand the specific differences between MAD, AD and AUC, regarding what exactly these indices are thought to measure in terms of psychology constructs.
Are we able to say, for example, that one of these reflects degrees of cognitive effort whereas the other reflects cognitive conflict? Or do they all measure the same thing but in slightly different ways?
Thank you for your support!

Hi,
Not an expert on mousetracking here, but still my 2 cents.
Any of those measures deviation from a reference in slightly different ways, as such I don't think it makes a lot of sense to link them to specific cognitive constructs. The key difference between is how sensitive they are to extreme values. For MAD you can a high value even if participants just briefly slipped and deviated far from the optimal trajectory. With AD and ROC this effect is somewhat ameliorated (as averaging is taking place). So differences between the scores should arise whenever there is no consistent, but only short-lived deviation.
Does this make sense?

Hi there,
thanks for commenting, @eduard. It seems I missed the question above (for some reason I did not get a notification via email for this specific post).
I agree with what Eduard wrote. In terms of the calculation, we discuss the differences in the following preprint on page 9: https://psyarxiv.com/v685r/ However, we also show that in practice these indices are often highly correlated (Fig. 6 A).
Best,
Pascal
Hi both,
My apologies for the super late reply, but thank you so much for this!
Cheers
