help needed with response keys in open sesame

Hello,

I am new to Open Sesame. I am currently writing a script for a priming study using audio. I have set up two response keys (z and /) and it has been working well. However, the / response doesn’t seem to work all of a sudden. The z response key works and brings me to the next trial. I need help as to why this happened.

Timeout is 2500ms. Pressing the / response key immediately brings me to the timeout screen even if 2500ms has not passed. I’m not sure what exactly is wrong. This is in psycho.

If I change it to xpyriment, both response keys work but the software crashes after 49 trials every time.

I need some advice to fix this!

  • Hi @zhane,

Difficult to tell what is going on without more information and possibly having a look at your task or a stripped down version of it.

It the task worked and it suddenly no longer does, you mat have introduced some change, so it's a matter of tracing back what you changed. One simple thing to check is whether you have the right keyboard profile active on your computer and whether you might have activated the CAPS LOCK key.

To help tracing back what is being registered, you can use some code to output the response variable to the console.

    Best,

    Fabrice.

  • Hi @zhane,

Honestly, my advice would be to just use another key (z and m is quite standard for example).

If you want to find out what happens, you could leave the allowed-keys field empty, and then check the logfile what key was pressed. Perhaps the mapping of your keyboard is unexpected. If the / indeed appears in the logfile then it could be a sign that this character is not being handled properly my Macos systems.

As for the issue with xpyriment, this is most likely unrelated. Share more information or the experiment if you want help on that.

ps, and please don't open the same discussion multiple times to prevent clutter. Thanks!
