No data saved even though participant completed the experiment

Hi all,

I recently published an online study on Prolific that was created via OpenSesame and hosted on Jatos Mindprobe. For most participants everything works fine, but occasionally, I can see that the participant was active for the expected duration, but no data was being logged. After a while, the status got stuck on DATA_RETREIVED, but still the file was empty. I confirmed with the participant and they actually completed the study. Is there any way for me to still access the data?

Thanks for any help!

Best,

Brent

  • Hi Brent,

the DATA_RETREIVED status just states that the client, that your experiment running in your participants browser, got all the data from the JATOS server to start - it does not mean that the experiment send result data back successfully. It can have many reasons why your experiment did not finish and did not send data and spontaneously I can come up with: 1) bad Internet connection, 2) too large result data, 3) bug in the programming. Did you have the chance to look at your participant's browser console and see whether there are any errors?

  • Hi Kristian

    Thank you for your reply.

I contacted the participant and the experiment finished correctly, so the problem appears to be in transferring the data. I specifically checked that the results data are small enough to transfer and other participants' data were transferred correctly. I guess it might indeed be a bad internet connection or the participant reloading the experiment. I did not check the browser console, but I will keep this in mind if the problem occurs again (thanks for the tip!).

I added an extra reminder in the experiment description to ensure a stable internet connection and not to reload the experiment etc. I was just wondering if there is a way to still access the data of this one participant or if it is lost.

    Unfortunately not

or the participant reloading the experiment

Actually you would see a (forbidden) reload in the results page. In the 'message' row you'd get the text 'It's not allowed to reload this component...'.
