Problem in Breaking a Loop with keypress

Hi all,
I am preparing an experiment in which participants watch a balloon inflates and they have to press the space to stop the inflation.
In 50% of the trials there is an imaginative agent who can stop the inflation.
So, now my exit from the inflation is define by a python variable which assumes 3 different values: 0,1,2.
If the participants press the space: break_inflation = 1
If the trial is the trial in which the the other agent can play, and no keypress occurs before a critical moment : break _inflation =0
if no response is detected :break_inflation= 2.

So I have this problem: When the I press space sometimes it immediately break the loop, in other cases, I have to press 2-3 or even 4 times the space to stop the inflation.

Thank you to anyone who can help me
