keypress control_question

Hi,

I apologize for the maybe not so smart question, but I don't seem to find info in the documentation.

I have set up an experiment and it is properly working, but I have just realized that it moves forward in the presentation of trials if the subject holds down one of the allowed keys. It does it in all cases if I set keyrelease and keypress, with ISI and without, flushing and non-flushing pending key events.

what could be a good strategy to avoid that the trial moves forward if the participant holds one single long time one key?

  • Hi @Lexa,

I think you've exhausted all the options I had in mind here. Setting the flushing of key presses would be my first suggestion, but you said you already tried this. I don't think this problem is easy to solve, or am I wrong @sebastiaan ?

  • Hi Lexa,

It sounds like flushing the keyboard events doesn't work, which in turn suggests that you're using Mac OS or Linux and either the xpyriment or legacy backend. Is that correct? If that's indeed it, then you're running into a bug in PyGame, one of the underlying libraries used by OpenSesame, and I indeed don't know how to resolve this. A workaround might be to switch to the psycho backend, which doesn't use PyGame.

    Cheers!

  • Hi, thank you for your answers. Maybe I haven't mentioned that probably I should have posted in OSWEB. I am trying to run it on browsers, and it does it in the online version.

I am inserting mini loops to check the answer of the participant, if he /she is holding down the key, but it is not very nice. I was wondering if anybody else had this problem.

Plus I am signalling here, maybe you already know, but I am experiencing error messages in the final frame when the experiment has to exit. It stores the data but the participant gets this error message, and then he/she worries something went wrong.

These things should be fixed. Do you know when is the new release of jatos going to be? Are these things going to be fixed soon? Thank you!

  • Hi @Lexa

Keep in mind that these are all open source software packages that are maintained by unpaid volunteers in their free time. We can never make any promises at what time period things will be fixed so please don't have any unrealistic expectations in that regard.

  • Hi, thank you for the reply. Yes I know, thank you for your work. I just heard there might be a new release and I am about to start a data collection. If it were anytime soon I would wait ... maybe these small things wouldn't be a problem anymore. I think they have to do with the interface with Jatos.

I am running it on windows but it has been run also on a mac. Even changing the backend the problem remains.
