Dear Colleagues ,

I have conducted a tapping experiment, examining beat production and I have to analyze participants' tapping data (csv files) . Since there is a great variability, I must use circular analysis.

I have downloaded the Circular module and already examined the example which is included.

It seems a little bit complicated to me, how I could organize my data in order to be able to analyze them.

I have conducted a tapping test, in 3 different tempi (slow, medium, fast) three times (pre-test, middle-test and final-test).

Each time, participants completed each task (slow, medium, fast) twice.


So, my dependent variables are the performances in the different tempi, and I want to compare the two measurements of each task both within the same time (pre, middle, final) and between each time.


There is a reference .csv file for each tempo. Taps of the participants are always off-beat. How can I present this difference using the circular analysis in JASP?

I am sending an example .csv file for 500 BPM. The data are from one participant in the two measurements only for the pre-test.

How can I include the inter-stimulus interval and appreciate the synchronisation consistency of each individual?

    Hi Marthapapa,

    I'm afraid that I have never used circular statistics myself. I think I can only advise you to talk with an expert for this particular analysis (it was a contributed module, so the other JASP team members are not experts either I think). Maybe someone else on this forum?!

    The classic text on circular statistics is Circular statistics in biology by Edward Batschelet. This is old (1981) but a copy should be found in any University library.

    I am just starting to think about using circular stats for a particular data set so I also am a beginner here - sorry not to be more helpful.

    Thank you very much for your responses! I have searched a lot the last 6 months, and I could say that I have somehow understood how it works. But I cannot work on Matlab, and I was excited that a statistical analysis could be finally completed in JASP. Thank you!

    Still, I have no clue how I should import my data in order to get the proper values and be able to analyze the results.

    Should I build new columns with their raw data, or would it be possible to import the means and absolute means, as well as the SDs that I have already extracted from the matlab code?
