Python crashing at multiple points on multiple devices

Hello, I've been having problems with python crashing on multiple devices at various points in my experiment. There doesn't seem to be any specific point at which python crashes, and I've run this experiment a total of 39 times before this started happening. This is the error message is:

Python seems to have crashed. This should not happen. If Python crashes often, please report it on the OpenSesame forum.

item-stack: ``

All three devices are running Windows 10 (don't meet the requirements for update to Windows 11)

Python 2.7.13

Open Sesame 3.2

Back-end: xpyriment

At the point of crashing, each device had memory around above 70%

Will upgrading Open Sesame help with this?

Thank you!

  • Hi @hannahl ,

If memory consumption reaches 70%, then this is almost certainly the cause of the Python crash. You're also using an outdated version of OpenSesame. I don't think that this is the issue, but it's still possible, so I would first update to the latest release of OpenSesame. Then, if the issue persists, please post the experiment file here, so we can see where the excessive memory consumption comes from.

  • Hi Sebastiaan,

I’ve updated all devices to have the latest version of opensesame and have run the experiment one time on each device and there have been no crashes so far. I think two of the main problems are that i’m running the experiments on almost obsolete surface go tablets and I also have a 30 minute long training video embedded in the middle of the experiment. Do you think maybe the video is contributing more to this problem?

Still it’s odd that it only started crashing after 30+ participants.

    Best,

    Hannah

  • Hi Hannah,

Would it be possible to extract the video from the experiment? So, essentially splitting the experiment into two parts? That long video is indeed a good candidate for memory issues.
