Supported by

Issue "WebGL unsupported in this browser"

Hi everyone!

One of my study participants reported to have an issue starting my (Jatos) experiment by using both Google Crome and Microsoft Edge. Below, you can find a screeshot of the problem they had in both cases. Maybe, it is worthy to say that they said to still use Windows 7 on their laptop.

Did someone have this problem already? How did they deal with that?

Thank you so much in advance

  • Hi,

This is more of an OSWeb issue and not a JATOS one. But actually I'm pretty sure the reason for this error message is that the browser on your participants computer is old and does not yet support WebGL.

  • Hi Kristian,

I'm sorry for the late replay. Thank you so much for you suggestion, though. Actually, the participant computer supports WebGL, as she checked using this test: https://get.webgl.org/

However, she is keeping on getting the error above. I don't know what else she might look for.

  • Hi @MicolG ,

@kri is correct about this: this message indicates that the browser doesn't support WebGL, or at least not in the way required by pixi.js, which is the graphics library used by OSWeb. (If the get.webgl.org website indicates that WebGL is supported, that might be because support is not an all-or-none phenomenon. To be honest, I'm not sure about that.)

  • Okay, thank you so much to both of you.

From my understanding, there is no way to solve out this issue but using another laptop, right?

    Best,

  • @MicolG I would indeed recommend using another laptop. In theory, you might be able to resolve this by updating the operating system/ video drivers, but that's not guaranteed to work and in any case it's probably more trouble than it's worth.
