Standard error of the mean (SEM) and asterisks in t-test graphs

Hello everyone,

I am a biologist and I usually use Prism for my statistics. Although it is extremely useful and easy to use, it is becoming too expensive for many researchers. I am looking for a credible, open-source alternative to Prism for this type of analysis.

JASP seems powerful for this purpose. In fact, I am starting with the simple and basic Student's t-test to see if it can meet our needs.

-Is there a way to plot SEMs on the bars?

-Also, could JASP graphically represent the “asterisks” between the different conditions?

Thank you for your help. I sincerely hope that JASP can be a real alternative to Prism.

  • Hello Cedric,

Interesting. I think we had much of what Prism has to offer already, and whatever is missing we can easily add. The problem is that we have such a long to-do list. Anyway, about the t-test: (1) yes, we can show the SEMs on the bars (in both directions, of course -- really, one should not use bars at all but points instead, but OK). (2) about the asterisks -- I have had this request before. I will ask what the status of these requests is. Below a screenshot of the t-test GUI with a small subset of options ticked:

  • Hello EJ,

I'm really sorry... I just saw that you replied.

    My sincere apologies.

Thanks for the info. That's great. We are also often asked to plot values on the graph. Is it possible to add this to the graph in question?

Many of us molecular and cellular biology researchers want to abandon/limit the use of Prism in favor of other software, particularly open source.

Overall, our applications revolve around t-tests and ANOVA (so on paper, nothing very complicated, although it is complicated enough for us...). Considering that the vast majority do not know how to code (and will not learn...), JASP seems like a credible option to us.

If biologists can help improve JASP, particularly in terms of user-friendliness (which is why we pay for Prism😅), we would be happy to pass on our requirements.

Thank you again for your initiative and for listening, and apologies once more for the delayed response.

  • Right now you cannot plot values onto the graph. This is something we could add to our graph editor. Please pass on your requirements! I am curious to see what Prism can do that we cannot, at the moment.

    EJ
