[solved] sketchpad does not end after response

edited April 2015 in OpenSesame

Hi guys, I set up an experiment that contains presenting first a series of 12 study sentences and then a series of 24 test sentences that participants have to evaluate as true or false. I use sketchpad items to present both the study stentences (for which I set the actual text in an inline) and the subsequent 24 test sentences (for which I set the text in a loop). While the study sentences work fine (i.e., pressing the spacebar proceeds immeidate to the next sentence), the test sentences do not. When I respond (by pressing F or J) the sketchpad does not end as it should but I have to instead press F or J multiple times before it proceeds to the next sentence. Don't know what's causing this...is it the keyboard_response item, the logger or...? Any ideas what's going on?
Thanks in advance,
marios

    Hi Marios,

Usually, when this happens, the keyboard_response is preceded by a sketchpad with a 'keypress' duration. So you have to press one key during the sketchpad, and then another key during the keyboard_response. Could it be that?

And, btw, nice to have met you in Oxford!

    Cheers,
    Sebastiaan

Yep! that was it. I changed the "keypress" to 0 in the duration field of the sketchpad and everything works fine. I also have a sketchpad to provide instructions at the very beginning of the experiment which is a bit slow to react to the keypress. This sketchpad is not followed by a keyboard_response item but instead by a loop. Any idea what is causing the delay there? It's not important for the experiment....I'm just curious! Anw, thanks very much for your help Sebastiaan. It was indeed very nice to meet you and hear about your research (awesome stuff by the way!).

That would be the preparation time of the loop, or rather (probably) the sequence within the loop. What you could do is add a blank sketchpad with a 0 ms duration just before the loop. That way the display will be blanked immediately after the key press. It doesn't actually reduce the preparation time, but it might make things feel smoother.

Thanks Sebastiaan. I had a feeling it was the preparation of the loop/sequence causing the delay but I had to know for sure :)
