[solved] Language settings

edited November 2015 in OpenSesame

Hey guys,

I just started my journey with Open Sesame and I encountered a small problem... I am working on a German computer and I noticed that some of the tabs and menu options are in German and some parts are in English. I changed the language setting for the Windows to English and reinstalled the program, however, nothing is changed. No commands seem to be working either.

Does anyone have an idea what s wrong with that and how can I fix it?
I am attaching a screen shot.

Would be super grateful for any tips!

    Hi Boris,

Not sure whether it works like this on a windows machine, but if you start OpenSesame from the console like this:

    opensesame --locale en_EN

it should start the normal English version. I suppose, what happened is that Opensesame chose German as default language due to the operation system. However, the German translation is rather outdated, so that there might be some items that don't have a translation yet. In such cases, OpenSesame falls back to English.

Does this solution work for you?

    Hello Eduard,

thank you for your swift reply!

I tried it and since I am totally green dunno if that was a good way of applying the code. In any case it doesn't work and I tried with different variations of this command.

Also, I am attaching the print screen of the outcome I get after typing it in.

Any ideas what is wrong with that?

    Best regards,
    Boris

    Hi Boris,

Eduard meant that you start OpenSesame with --locale en_EN as command-line arguments. However, if you want to disable the German translation permanently, you can also delete the translation file. This is resources/locale/de_DE.qm, a subfolder of the OpenSesame program folder.

    Cheers,
    Sebastiaan

    Hello Sebastiaan,

    thanks! Now it worked!
Wouldn't expect it to be so easy :-)

  • Hi there!
I am experiencing a similar issue as I have downloaded OS from Germany but I would like to run the program in English. However I am working with Mac and the above mentioned solution is not working for me. Any hint on hot to get the program running in English on MacBook?
    Thank you in advance!

I believe that, on Mac OS, you can browse the app folder (which is kind of like a zip file), and remove the de_DE.ts de_DE.qm file, similar to what is described above for Windows. I don't know the details though. @daniel, how does that work on Mac OS?

  • Thank you Sebastian! We have tried to permanently deleting the file "qscintilla_de.qm" from the folder: Applications/OpenSesame.app/Contents/Resources and restarting the machine but it did not work..any other way? I would really prefer to run the program in English as I am not very familiar with German :-)

    Thank you!

  • There is a file opensesame_resources\locale\de_DE.qm. That's the one you want.

  • Hi Sebastian, I am sorry but there is not such a file in the "resources" folder. There is a folder called "translation" with a file called "qscintilla_de.qm" which I have deleted but is not changing the language. Anyway, we have turnaround the issue changing the system preferences on mac and settina the language and region to UK.

  • The file is there--somewhere. But it's burried in the Mac OS app's folder structure, which I'm not familiar with. Maybe you can do file search to find it?

  • Hi Guys,
It's buried a long way down. You'll find this file at:
    OpenSesame.app/Contents/Resources/lib/python2.7/site-packages/share/opensesame_resources/locale/
    Hopefully this helps!

  • Hi Daniel, I found the file at exactly that location, thank you very much! Thank you both!

  • Hi guys, I’m sorry I open the discussion again.

I’m facing the same problem now.

I downloaded the latest version of Open Sesame. But, there are some problems.

first, the display is 75% so I can’t scroll down (the language is English). So I decided to uninstall then install it again.

but, when I re-install it, the language change. Here I attached the screenshoot.

I followed your steps above but the language doesn’t change into English.

could you help me to solve these problems (both language and the display)? Thank you

  • Hi,

Have you found the file/directory that Daniel mentioned in his last post? If you removed it, and the problem still exists, you can do a file search for files that include the term "de_DE". For me (on a Linux) those were those files here (relative to the root directory of Opensesame):

I think only the first two are the ones that make Opensesame appear German for you. So, removing them should be sufficient.

If that doesn't work, you can of course also try to change to language/region settings of your computer. Then, Opensesame won't try to speak German to you.

    Hope this helps,

    Eduard
