Error when renaming items in Jazzy James 3.1.3

edited November 2016 in OpenSesame

Hi,
So I've been using Open Sesame for a few years now, using it to teach students the basics of programming a psychophysics experiment. However, this year, we are having major issues with the 'Jazzy James' version. Specifically, whenever we attempt to rename objects, we keep getting the same error message (see attached). Interestingly, the name change is present in the tab at the top of the screen but is not in the experiment overview. I'm enclosing a screen capture, and the experiment file. This error is making OpenSesame unusable - so any suggestion as to a fix would be very appreciated.

  • Hi,

This seems like a serious problem, but I cannot reproduce it. So a few questions:

    • Are you using the standard 3.1.3 Mac OS package as provided on the documentation site?
    • Do you get the same error on Windows/ Linux?
    • Does this always happen when you rename an item through the overview area?
    • Does this also happen when you rename an item when clicking on its name in the tab area?

@Daniel, have you seen this problem on Mac OS before?

    Cheers,
    Sebastiaan

No I haven't seen this before, and I can't reproduce it on my Mac with 3.1.3. I will see if I can do things differently to force the problem to occur.
This sounds serious indeed; especially if it happens on multiple macs. I assume it happens on more macs than your own Aaron? And what version of MacOS are you running?

    Hi @sebastiaan ,
I'm having the same problem on my Windows 10 64-bit. When I try to rename any object, I get the error message. Sometimes when I drag an object into the sequence the error will occur as well. Besides, I cannot send the error message (it does not respond when I click the button).
After the error, when I click the object in the overview area, it continues showing the error message.
I did not have this problem with 3.1.1, but it happens frequently with 3.1.3.

Here's the error message I got when I renamed the object in the tab area.
(In this case it happened when I renamed it in the tab area, but I get the same error when renaming objects in the overview area too.)

Thanks for reporting this. That we cannot reproduce makes it difficult to debug, but it's on the radar and we're going to look into it. @Josh @eduard Have you seen this error?

PS. I renamed the discussion so that it's easier to find for people with the same problem.

  • Hi,

Nope, I can't reproduce it on Ubuntu 14.04. Later today, I will try on a Windows machine.

  • Hi, thanks for your reply!
I've been always enjoying using Opensesame, but this error really bothers me a lot... :(
I recorded how the error happened, hoping it helps.

  • Hi Ellot,

This video indeed helped. When I tested it, I only tried to change the variable names in the title, not really inside the body of the sequence. Now, I could reproduce the error, quite reliably actually. It seems it occurs only for some items, but not all, e.g., sequences and inline_scripts worked perfectly fine, whereas others that I tested (sketchpad, feedback,.synth, logger, keyboard, mouse) lead to the crash. I haven't tested all items though.

    Hope this helps.

  • Excellent, yes, I see it too now. Indeed, it happens when you rename in the body of the sequence, which I don't normally do. And then only under specific situations.

For now, you can work around this by renaming the items either in the overview area, or by opening the item's tab and clicking on the name there. @Elliot_Luo Can you confirm that those ways of renaming items do work?

Hi @sebastiaan , either renaming the items in the overview area or renaming the name on the tab works fine. I remember I had the problem while renaming in the overview area but I can't reproduce it now.
My guess is that I encountered the problem when renaming objects in the sequence, then I tried to rename the same object in the overview area but still having the error.

There's another strange bug... it happened around 0:20.
I encountered this bug several times with 3.1.3, but not all the time. I accidentally recorded it.

  • Here's a prerelease that should fix the renaming issue (3.1.4a1 and later):

Please let me know if that works for you. It's a pretty serious, or at least annoying, problem, so we'll release 3.1.4 soon to fix it.

@Elliot_Luo What do you mean exactly? I can see the renaming issue, but I don't see what you mean with another bug.

  • When he dragged a sketchpad into the overview area, it appeared there twice, each of them with the same label.

  • Ow right. I suspect that's a side effect of the failed renaming, which left a new_sketchpad entry in the experiment sequence.

  • Hi @sebastiaan and @eduard ,
With the prelease, renaming in the sequence works fine now!

Thank you for your dedication to Opensesame!!
