[open] "Scrolling" in Expyriment

edited June 2015 in OpenSesame

Hello everybody,

I got a problem with Expyriment that some of you might know a solution for.

When I start my experiment on full screen, I can move the screen downwards or to the right, just by MOVING the mouse cursor (no clicking or scrolling). The problem to this is that I measure response times and that I can't move the screen back by moving the mouse to the bottom or to the left side of the screen. So the answer options (it`s all written in form bases) just disappear..

I tried different screen resultions (on my laptop as well as in OpenSesame itself), different mouse settings, different external mouses and an external screen.. nothing worked out. I then tried to use legacy and psychopy instead, but they are unfortunately too slow to handle the amount of data and files that are in there. But at least the scrolling problem did not occur..

Thank you in advance for any kind of advice!

Greetings
Theresa

    Hi Theresa,

I don't really understand the problem here. Do you mean that the display is locked to the position of the mouse cursor? And is that a problem, or is that exactly what you want to achieve? Could you describe in a bit more detail what exactly happens, because either this is really bizarre, or I misunderstand.

    Cheers,
    Sebastiaan

    Hi Sebastiaan,

sorry that I confused you. I definitely don't want the screen to move. Because otherwise the answer buttons will disappear. It is like when you scroll down a page in the browser, but it happens by just moving the mouse cursor within the screen. You don`t need to click or actually scroll using the mouse wheel. This happens when the cursor is moved to the upper half and the left of the screen. When I move the mouse to the lower half or to the right nothing happens, so I can't "retract" the screen. Is this clearer now?

    Thank you,
    Theresa

    Hi Theresa,

Yes, it's clearer now. It was actually already clear to begin with. But because it is so bizarre, I thought I might have misunderstood.

So: the display is not supposed to move along with the mouse cursor. I've never heard of that happening, and I don't see how this behavior could arise from a bug somewhere (although you never know). One thing that comes to mind is that some application runs in the background and does this for you. What kind of system are you using? Are there other weird things happening? For example, does the screen look 'zoomed in'?

    Cheers,
    Sebastiaan

    Hi Sebastiaan,

thanks for answering again. youre right, its very bizarre. And after I solved the problem, it appears even stranger.. And no, no other weird things happened except for this...

The last shot I took was to try it with another computer.. AND it worked. So - and I dont understand why - it was my notebook who did this (Lenovo Think Pad with Windows7). Now I use a Dell with the same 13" screen with Windows 8.1. I didnt change anything in the settings of the programme to make it work on the new computer, so I really dont understand why this happened. As I told you, I tried different resolutions, mouses and even external screens. Nothing helped. Crazy :)
