OpenSesame: incorrect photo rotation

Hello,

I have a question about the rotation of photos in my OpenSesame experiment.

In the trial sequence I added a sketchpad. This sketchpad contains a photo, which varies per trial. A total of eight different photos are referred to in this sketchpad. Per trial a different photo will be shown in the experiment. This was done by changing the name in the script. The name 'file = ....' therefore refers to the variable name, such as: file = photo_ [photo_cue] .png.

The following problem has arisen:

Some of these photos mentioned above are rotated incorrectly in the experiment. The photos I uploaded are rotated well in both the files on my computer and the file pool in OpenSesame.

I tried to solve this problem as follows:

I deleted the photos of the file pool in OpenSesame. Then, I rotated the photos that were rotated incorrectly (turned to the right) back to the left in the files on my computer. Then, I uploaded the photos again in the file pool in OpsenSesame and when I open these photos in OpenSesame, they seem to be rotated well. So i ran the experiment again.

The photos shown in the experiment are still rotated wrong. How can I solve this problem?

Thank you,

Renee

  • Hi Renee,

I suspect that the rotation information is stored as metadata, rather than that the photos are actually rotated, and that OpenSesame doesn't use that metadata. If you open the photos in an editor (Gimp, say), actually rotate them, and then save them again, then I assure that they will be rotated also in OpenSesame!

  • Hi Sebastiaan,

    Thank you for your response!

I have rotated the photos in an editor and saved them again. Unfortunately, the problem still isn't fixed. What else can I do?

    Thanks,

    Renee

  • Hi Renee,

I'm pretty confident in my diagnosis ;-) Can you upload one of the problematic photos here?

    Cheers!

  • Sebastiaan,

The photos were saved as jpg files. I deleted the photos and saved them as png files. Now, the problem is mostly fixed: the photos are rotated well but some of them are zoomed in while running the experiment.

I only use portrait photos. What size is the best for these photos and how can I set that in OpenSesame in such a way that the photos will not be zoomed in while running the experiment?

Hope to hear from you soon!

    Renee

  • Hi Renee,

OpenSesame allows you to scale images in the sketchpad . So you can use that to make images bigger or smaller. However, ideally you would just leave the original scaling and resize your images in an image editor so that (when viewed at 100% or 1× zoom) they look good.

    Cheers!
