fullscreen mode and touch_response

Hi all,

first of all: thank you for the great program! I started using it a year ago and I rapidly became a huge fan! I really enjoy your work!

I am approcing to online experiments so I tried to translate a script to OsWeb mode + Jatos.

My problem is that when I use a sketchpad and touch_response for checking where the subject has clicked, all works fine except in OsWeb fullscreen mode.

In fullscreen the cell number of the touch_response answer does not fit to the sketchpad, so the answer is wrong because of the position of the click.

It seems to me that the sketchpad is correctly stretched to fullscreen, while the touch_response is not.

Can you please help me? I would like to use fullscreen mode because of the idea of a more immersive envirorment.

Hi Luca,

does it work in windows mode? I am not familiar with the specifics of Osweb unfortunately, but I thought that drawing responses (which are based on cursor_roi, I think?) are not supported in Osweb at all, so I didnt except it to work in first place.

It works perfectly in windows mode (either in opensesame and OsWeb). I used a @sebastiaan suggestion for implementation of rating scale in OsWeb:

I think that there is some problem in the cursor_x and cursor_y interpretation in OsWeb fullscreen mode... maybe... :/

Hi all,

I made this little example to test the corrispondence between sketchpad target position and touch response. Hope this could help to test this problem.

Here my test with Windows 10 - 1909 and Chrome v.83.0.4:

• in opensesame window mode or fullscreen: all works fine
• in OsWeb window mode (browser window maximized and not maximized): all works fine
• in OsWeb with fullscreen checked: the experiment stretches to fullscreen but the response is not correct

Possible workaround:

I tried to launch the esxperiment in OsWeb normally (no fullscreen), and after I pushed F11 on keyboard to go to browser Fullscreen mode and it works!

I send you a screenshot just to say that it is not the same stretched fullscreen modality as OsWeb, but maybe it could be a possible workaround.

Hi Luca,

Thanks for helping! Unfortunately, your uploads are gone. Could you reupload them? Then, I will file an issue report on Github. It is great that you found a work around, but ideally we would properly fix it eventually. For example, if an experiment runs in true fullscreen mode, it usually runs smoother and with tighter timing than in window mode (I don't know though in how far this translates to online experimenting).

Hi all!

Alternatively, is there any way to prevent the screen from stretching or to get it to stretch proportionately? I believe that Opensesame stretches the screen to a size that's proportional to the original, whereas OSWeb seems to stretch fully to fit.

Now, i see what you mean. Yes, that looks like an issue. But what @Candice said makes sense I think.

Try setting the resolution of the experiment (in the experiment tab, first item in the overview area), to the resolution of the screen that you are running on. The default is 1026x768 it seems, so it will be stretched to fullscreen, when your actual screen has a higher resolution (which most screens have).

When I just tried it, the clicks all match up, regardless of whether I use windowed or fullscreen mode.

Hi all,

I don't know if that can help, but for my experiment I was using touch_response and I encountered a similar issue. Stretching the experiment window using the fullscreen option in jatos would mess up with the positions of my objects (in terms of columns and rows coordinates of the touch_response) and the consequent recording of the response.

What I did was adding an inline_javascript item at the very beginning of my experiment with this in the Run tab:

var elem = document.documentElement; if (elem.requestFullscreen) { elem.requestFullscreen() }

This basically activates the fullscreen mode of the browser instead of OSWeb. This means that the proportion of my experiment (1026x768) are maintained, and the rest of the screen is just filled in with the background color, but just the window of 1026x768 will be considered for the touch response.

Not sure it can help but worth a try!
