Experiment Android tablet
in OpenSesame
Hi
Is it possible to use Open Sesame on an Android tablet?
Our experience already runs on Windows with adults. We want to do the same thing on a tablet with children.
Children will have to answer by pressing on the screen while adults would answer on a keyboard.
How to collect the answers on the tablet? (use a blue and a red button to answer for example)
Thank you for your help,
Mikael

Hi Mikael,
It is possible to run Opensesame on Android tablets. For that reason the droid backend was created. However, the development of droid has stopped quite a while ago. Therefore, you will probably face issues when you try to set up your experiment with droids.
Rather, I would recommend that you will use Windows tablets. On them the regular opensesame package can run, which should be much more robust than the droid version.
How to collect the answers on the tablet?
normally a touch response can be used, that you just tap the options you want to choose. You might also be able to connect a button box if the tablets support that. The way you collect the responses then depends on the interface between tablet and response device.

Hello Edouard,
considering the cost of tablets under Windows OS, we will still try to find a solution under Android (we will use more than 30 devices).
Thanks for your answers,
Mikael
hi again,
I was able to run my experiment on an old test tablet (Android 5) and it works.
when I launch this same experiment on a recent tablet (Android 9), the runtime closes immediately. I retrieved the debug-file I put here. It seems that the touch-response plugin failed to load.
Any idea how to fix it?
Thanks
Mikael
Hi Mikael,
That is what I meant. The droid backend is not compatible with the recent versions of the android OS. It is hard to predict how much work exactly it would need to fix it, but chances are high, you'd have to put quite a bit of work into it. If it works with the old Android, I would suggest you keep on using that system.
In any case, I cannot help with that particular error message.
Sorry,
Eduard
Thank you Eduard for your answer,
so we will turn to windows 10 tablets despite the higher costs.
we can't use the old tablets which are not powerful enough for our needs.
thanks again

Dear Mikael,
Just to add, you could also consider creating a web-based experiment with OSWeb, and use mouse_response as your input; users on computers can use their mouse, and users with tablets can just tap on the screen. You would have to use javascript for scoring the answers, since OSWeb doesn't do linked sketchpads yet.

Hi Joelle,
unfortunatly I can't link my tablet to internet during the experiment. Your (interesting) solution doesn't work for me.
Mikael
Hi Mikael, I am looking for the same thing (running experiments offline on tablets) I was wondering what are the solutions you found ?
Thanks in advance,
Camille
Hi Camille,
Unfortunately, no simple solution has been found for Android tablets. We are buying Windows tablets to deploy the software.
