Problems with large files

Hi,

I am adapting a priming experiemnt to run on OSWEB. The experiements uses images as primes which makes the file large (900mb). We plan on making the images smaller but it still presents a problem wiht loading times.

I read somewhere that OSWEB can call images "on demand" rather than loading them all into the browser at the start of the experiment. Is this possible? If so, woujld anyone have instructions or a link?

The other alternative would be to present the experiment in stages as several components in Jatos. I have followed these instructions https://forum.cogsci.nl/discussion/5468/integrating-osweb-as-a-jatos-component to set up a consent form followed by an OSWEB study [just to practice] and I have managed to get it working. However, I am struggelling to get 2 OSWEB studies to work as components. Are there any instructions out there?

best wishes

  • Hi @Skilli

900 MB is way too large for an online experiment. Even if you can reduce its size 100x to 9 MB this is still too big. For web-based stuff, always aim to keep your asset's size below 5MB. Less is even better.

That being said. In Osweb's current implementation all assets are loaded before the experiment begins. This is to prevent delays due to loading times when the actual experiment has started. There is currently no easy way to download assets on-demand
