Online experiment - okay to bypass compatibility check?

Hi there,

Apologies if this has already been asked. Basically my experiment has quite a lot of components to it with a lot of files so it is over 10MB (currently at 27MB). When running this online it tells me this experiment is over the recommended minimum of 10MB. But I can tick the bypass compatibility check and it appears to run fine. I have even uploaded to JATOS and it seems to run okay on other PCs I've tested.

I'm just wondering is there any other issue with bypassing this compatibility check that I can't see - i.e., it appears to be running okay but maybe I'm missing something. I am interested in reaction time data - is it possible that this may be compromised if there is slow loading/preparing time in the trials (although from my testing it looks like everything loads fine).

I might be overthinking this one but want to see if anyone knows anything about this.

Thanks in advance.

Matthew

  • Hi @MDJ ,

If the only warning is that the experiment is too large, then in principle you can ignore this warning. Of course, a large experiment will result in increased loading times, especially when participants have a slow connection. Once the expriment is loaded, which happens at the start, it will not result in additional delays though.

    Hope this clears things up!

  • Hi,

I'd recommend to test your experiment online with a slow network to be sure that your increased load doesn't harm the speed. An easy way to do this is with your browser's developer tools / throttle network.

  • Hi,

Thanks for the responses. I used the throttle network and simulated a very slow network in Chrome "slow 3g" (Download - 412 Kbps, Upload - 674 Kbps) and the loading time was approx 10.7 mins. The "fast 3G" profile (Download - 1.44 Mbps, Upload - 932 Kbps) was 3.1 mins.

But these seem very slow. I tried the UK (where my participants will be from) average network speed (download 64mbps, upload - 42Mbs) and it loaded within a few seconds. I will rescale a few of the images down slightly but chances are it'll be mostly fine at this speed.

    Thanks for your help!

    Matthew
