Version 4 on Windows 11

Hello,

I have installed version 4 on a Windows 11 computer and saved the experiment under a new name as suggested. The program interface does not shift to French and the parameters of the backend selection are not available (the show up in grey). What can I do ?

Sheers,

Gérard

  • I could shift to the French interface using the preferences menu item but no way to access the back-end parameters. The experiment that I try to run has been designed with the version described in the attachment.

  • I am able to manually adapt the general script, for instance change the screen selection, so the problem is mainly a question of interface.

  • Hi @gerhono ,

If the backend box is grayed out, then that means that the experiment is configured to use a backend that is not supported in OpenSesame 4. (Maybe the Droid backend?) You can fix this by editing the general script of the experiment and removing the lines that specify the backend: set [name]_backend [value].

    Does that help?

  • Hi Sebastiaan,

Thanks for your fast reply. I am not sure of the changes I have to make. The setup script is attached.

  • Hi @gerhono ,

The experiment is set to use the psycho backend, which is fine. What do you mean that the parameters of the backend selection are grayed out?

  • Hi Sebastiaan,

I am in the process of reusing under version 4 some experiments that were created with version 3 and I notice that I cannot access the backend parameters through the new interface. In this case, I have to modify the screen number and the only way to do that is to modify the script because the button that is supposed to give access to the parameters is greyed out. As you can see in the attachment, some parameters are actually visible, but they do not cover the whole range of possibilities, like changing the screen number. Of course, this is not a big problem for this specific situation, because I can go to the script but if I wanted to change the backend, I would be stuck.

    Thanks,

    Gérard

  • Hi @gerhono ,

I see, yes. Can you send me an experiment that illustrates the issue? There's probably a simple explanation for this, but I don't see what it is right now.

    — Sebastiaan

  • Hello Sebastiaan,

All the experiments are affected by that same problem. They make use of many graphics and sounds so I just send you a light one that demonstrates the problem anyway. It is interesting to notice that since I started again some testing, I get each time a message about updates that you will see on the screenshot.

    Thanks,

    Gérard

  • I came to the forum with a similar issue to @gerhono - I had an older experiment where the settings were greyed out. I edited the script as @sebastiaan suggested above and found that the set sampler backend was set to 'legacy' and all the other backend settings were 'psycho'. After I changed all the backend references in the script to 'legacy' the experiment settings became active again.

  • @mike and @Geraldstica Ah thanks, that's correct. This was to psychopy (with legacy sound) option in OpenSesame 3.3, but doesn't exist anymore in 4.0.

  • Positive feedback about your updates

I am in the process of reviewing my experiments in order to comply with the requirements of version 4. The possibility to re-initialize the default backend facilitates the adaptation. It implies some minor changes like modifying the sampling rate of some sound files because the combination of different rates in the same experiment is no longer compatible with the PsychoPy backend. I also appreciate the pre-programmed scripts for the package updates.

    Thank you !

  • Thanks, that's nice to hear! (I usually only hear when things go wrong.)
