OpenSesame doesn't want to convert my OSweb file to excel (UnicodeDecodeError)

Hello,

recently I collected data with 2 OSweb experiments. I finished collecting the data and tried converting them to excel. One converts with no issues, but the other shows this error when trying to convert it:

'charmap' codec can't decode byte 0x81 in position 146: character maps to <undefined>'UnicodeDecodeError' object has no attribute 'markdown'

I don't know how to approach this issue. I tried manually converting the text data into excel but it's really inconvenient to do it that way.

Any help would be appreciated.

  • Hi @idktam ,

Are you running the latest versions of OpenSesame/ OSWeb? If not, then I would update and try again. If the issue still persists with the latest versions, then it would be helpful if you attach a results file here that illustrates the issue.

  • Hello @sebastiaan, thank you for your reply

I'm running the latest version (4.0, Melodramatic Milgram), I redownloaded it yesterday to check if the version was the issue but that did not fix it.

If it matters, I'm running the experiment on the mindprobe server.

I'm gonna attach the result files.

Maybe they have some some non-standard characters that can't be converted?

  • Hi @idktam ,

Thanks again for bringing this to our attention. 👌 There was indeed a bug in conversion of result files with special characters on Windows. A bugfix (2.0.3.0) will appear in the updater, and if you install that you should be able to convert the results.

  • Hi @sebastiaan,

I updated the packages but it still doesn't work :(, it works on everything else except for this file.

Is there any way you could convert it and send it back? I wouldn't ask this but its the last thing I need before I can start analyzing my data so I would really appreciate it.

  • Hi @idktam ,

If the conversion still fails, then the update was likely not successful or you need to restart OpenSesame for the update to take effect. The bug has been fixed, I assure you!

After starting OpenSesame, wait for a while for the update notification to appear, then view the updates and execute them. In the console (Ctrl+D), you will see the updates being executed. If you see an error message in the console, please post it here.
